Tanzania’s Frankie Maston “Mirrored Ep Review
By Anne Tendwa

With his angelic voice, imaginative writing and uplifting energy, Frankie Maston has become one of Tanzania’s rising stars in the music industry. He has officially released his debut EP titled ‘Mirrored’ in late July 2022.
He kicks off the project with a bold love song ‘Run On My Mind’. The track is reminiscent of an early 2000’s RnB joint where one is not shy in the expression of their feelings. Frankie’s vocal layering takes the cake on this track as he not only displays his ability to seamlessly weave his voice with the instrumental, but his ingenious vocal arrangement is more noteworthy.
‘Fall in Love’ is the second track on this EP. This is quickly becoming a fan favorite, especially at weddings and it is very clear to see why. The song urges you to ‘fall in love’, something that I am certain many of us can agree is pleasurable and satisfying. Zouk elements are heard throughout the instrumental.
Track number 3 ‘Give It To You’ features rap goddess Frida Amani. She is one of the only 3 features on the EP and brings some much needed fire to the sweet reggae joint. Frankie Maston is known to experiment with reggae sounds and is one of the only Tanzanian artists to do so with great success. He proves his versatility once more in ‘Give It To You’.
‘Coming Out (Fresh n Clean)’ is the lead single from ‘Mirrored’. The pop track is bursting with energy and character. It makes you want to get up, put on your dancing shoes and bust a move! Frankie Maston doesn’t want anyone to “mess up his groove” when he’s “coming out fresh and clean”. The lyricism in this song is very catchy and creative in order to capture these sentiments as accurately as possible.
‘Nimepatwa’ is Swahili for ‘I have been captured’, which is coincidentally the effect that Frankie Maston has on the listeners from the moment this track begins. Bongo Fleva elements are very heavy in this song. The large use of swahili lyrics and bongo fleva style writing pushes this to great heights. Definitely a favorite on this project.
Track number 6 ‘Murder’ featuring Bryan The Mensah is a very interesting love song that speaks of just how murderous love can be. Bryan does an excellent job of responding to Frankie’s request in his verse which makes it feel like a great back and forth form of storytelling. A lost art in Tanzanian music that Frankie Maston revives in ‘Murder’.
‘Najua’ featuring Kingson is unmistakably Bongo Fleva. From the production to the artists cadence and lyricism. This song is a breath of fresh air as it proves that Frankie Maston is not afraid of more conventional Tanzanian music styles.
The last song on this EP ‘Who I Am’ is a declaration of self-love and self acceptance. Frankie Maston is proud of his truth and stands in it. A very fitting end to a beautiful project.
