A Day At The Lazy Lagoon: Weekend Get Away

The beach is always a nice place to clear your head and be stress free. The feeling of sand on your feet and the sun on your skin always makes one forget about any worries clouding their mind. This article is about a secret private island on the shores of Bagamaoyo, Tanzania.

The beach is always a nice place to clear your head and be stress free. The feeling of sand on your feet and the sun on your skin always makes one forget about any worries clouding their mind. This article is about a secret private island on the shores of Bagamaoyo, Tanzania.

Last July I was lucky enough to be invited for a getaway to bagamoyo. A friend of mine asked me and some other friends to accompany her and I couldn’t be more excited to leave behind everything else for a breather.

Imagine living on a private island with your house facing the ocean and witnessing the sun rise and set every day. This was what it was like to stay at the lazy lagoon hotel for that amazing but short weekend.

When we arrived at Bagamoyo a place called FETA mbegani campus, a school for fishermen, we were escorted to a boat that we used to cross the ocean to the island. The island had only the one hotel on it since the rooms there are not similar to other hotels in the city. Each guest is given a private house that faces the ocean and has enough space to accommodate a family.

The services was wonderful. All the people there were friendly and helpful with whatever we needed. The manager was the friendliest of them all. He was always around to keep us company since we were very few guests around including two couples and the group I was in. Whenever it was time for breakfast, lunch or dinner we always got a different menu from yesterday’s which was so refreshing. Funny thing was the first meal we had was nice but it was very little to satisfy us. Me and my friends asked the waiter why the small potions, was it because we were ladies? The waiter explained that many foreigners who come to stay there prefer small potion

I always woke up earlier than my friends and sat outside to watch the sun rise. With the wave sounds on the beach it always calmed me and it could always make me feel free of anything else. During the day, whenever we were tired of staying on the beach, we went to play some games with the Maasai who were around. I even learned to play pool and shoot darts. We were not lucky enough to go snorkeling because of the tides but we went swimming instead. Sometimes my friends insisted a lot to just rest in our room but I always wanted to stay on the beach and chase any small crabs I could see.

Those three days were the best I had in this whole year. When it was time to leave, most members of the hotel came to see us off. We were really sad since they said we made it livelier than any guests before. I never said this but we were always talking, laughing and mostly loud that they came to know us all very well.

It was a fun time for sure and so worthy to skip the city for. Lazy lagoon will always be a place to remember and I hope

Three Lessons Corona Has Left Us With

The world might have heard of the saying goes by Cancer had picked a wrong diva but not Corona has picked a wrong country as many Tanzanians claim; why! Because regardless the geographical location or population the country is, it has somehow either experienced this unforgettable pandemic disease or its effects

The world might have heard of the saying goes by Cancer had picked a wrong diva but not Corona has picked a wrong country as many Tanzanians claim; why! Because regardless the geographical location or population the country is, it has somehow either experienced this unforgettable pandemic disease or its effects. Many families have lost their loved ones, Nations have lost the heroes and great leaders, mean while uncountable number of marriages have unexpectedly failed because it was about time the couples had to face each other’s hidden true colors throughout the Quarantine period. Interestingly.

Remarkably in Tanzania; the number of pregnancies in schools went tremendously higher than usual especially in Southern Tanzania and brought exceptional cases ever to happen in a country. This was one of those hectic moments in a lifetime when few parents had to witness the daughters became pregnant from their blood brothers just because of spending months together in the houses. What a horrible trauma for both parents and children!

Generally; the entire world had felt this global mental crisis of which no media outlet could be at rest except updating and enthusiastically reporting thousands of incidents while educating citizens on the precautions. This magazine however, respects all the incredible coverage done throughout but will not unnecessary repeat their works rather we will focus on the lessons learnt from corona.

 Learn to save money

In other words; it is about the time people learn to have plans A and B in their lives in case things fall apart unforeseen. A bitter truth about many people in Africa including Tanzania is; we do not have a habit of saving…whichever it is; money, food or even time. The money management has been a long time nightmare for us that’s why people would risk their lives regardless of how bad the circumstance may show up, just to get a family food for tomorrow. Sadly eight out of ten people could still go to their daily activities during Quarantine; worried more about their families dying of hunger other than the dangerous Covid-19 itself. Recalling form the situation, many Tanzanians could not afford a kilogram of sugar due to its highest price ever to happen in the country. Governments, Organizations and each individual is responsible and must consider ‘saving habit’ on a daily basis.

Appreciating the doctors everyday

There is no the paramount moment in 21st century where the world has appreciated the doctors more as the moment of Covid-19 although our appreciation should not wait for the pandemic to pop-up, because at some point everyone gets sick. The doctors have always been sacrificing their all just to make sure they save lives. The unknown figure of doctors have lost their lives to Corona in the process of saving others’ which surprisingly did not stop the rest of them to continue support their patients. In the developing countries like Tanzania where there has been shortage of equipment’s such as OPP, the doctors had a chance to quit and choose to protect themselves at home, oppositely they did what was possible in their hands to attend on their duties despite the dangerous environment. The yearly health budgets must make doctors’ safety a number one priority in all matters regarding health because it cannot be improved without their consent.

Working from home

It is about time for families to start investing more on the quality time at home.  A Zimbabwean man known as Mr. Arnold who is now residing in Tanzania told this magazine the reasons why such cases like marriage failure and students’ pregnancies happened; it is because there is no groundwork set for both parents and children to make a useful time while at home.

Where I come from we believe that if a man is at home before 8:00pm he is useless. We would rather make it to bars or do anything to kill time just to avoid being at home before the chosen time. Now imagine the Quarantine commands us to spend unlimited hours with the wives who are by nature are so talkative and men don’t like that and yet they have nothing to keep them busy…only divorce should be a savage to such families.  This goes to children as well, we parents must start teaching our kids to be busy at home but this doesn’t mean we should ignore spending the quality time with family together’ He said.
On a nutshell; despite of all that took place the Tanzanians have remained calm and maintain their positive attitudes towards life in general. With on-going the 2020 election campaign at the moment, majority of citizens have experienced the businesses failures because of the almost no money circulations but are still working hard and keep their hopes higher for a better tomorrow.

RECREATIONAL AND EXTREME SPORTS IN THE COUNTRY

People tend to find different ways to bring thrill in their lives when doing recreational activities. Extreme sports are all about the thrill. The extreme here is like what it seems, taking it to the furthest when coming to these sports. You want to see where your limit is when engaging in these activities. The element of danger that exists in the extreme sports is what makes them more fun and performed by many. Even though they tend to be done mostly when one participates in recreational ventures, they are very much physical exercises. Here is where the confusion comes since many of the extreme sports are done mostly when doing recreational activities, it becomes hard to differentiate the two. But since there is no way knowing what determines a recreational activity and an extreme sport, the following are some of the most commonly extreme sports that can also be a recreational activity.

Skydiving, this is one of the popular extreme sport. It involves jumping out of an airplane mid-flight and doing different mid-air tricks before deploying the parachute. It surely produces an adrenaline rush for those who love to make risks when engaging in recreational activities. It still is considered as a sport worldwide. It can therefore fall in-between. Either way, jumping from a plane and falling through the air at 120 miles per hour surely gets people’s attention.

Rock climbing, this is a great indoor and outdoor activity. It can either be an extreme sport or a recreational activity. It really makes a person push themselves to a certain limit. It involves use of a lot of body strength and being okay with heights. It is extreme depending on the heights and safety features you take when climbing a rock wall or mountain. It’s a good stress removal and anger management cure. If you think about it, climbing a rock wall will surely make you occupied instead of being angry.

Skiing, one of the oldest sports of all time. It was always a simple and careful sport of using skis to travel on snow. It started to change when people started doing their own twists when skiing. They started doing different freestyles and tricks like snowboarders and it became an obsession. Thereafter skiing was said to an extreme sport since it was a little dangerous and a lot more competitive. It still is a recreational activity when done without the tricks and not in competitions.

skiing

Scuba diving, this is a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus. That’s what SCUBA means literally. When scuba diving you need important equipment that help with breathing underwater. This to me is more of a recreational activity than an extreme sport. Although it’s an underwater sport, a lot of people practice scuba diving when they go on vacations or to have fun. It is strictly advised to be practised with only those who have mastered swimming in deep oceans since it’s a dangerous sport going underwater which is an inhospitable environment. When you keep the danger and all the bad of scuba diving, it’s a really interesting beautiful activity since you see all the underwater life and you feel free being in water.

Snowboarding, it is a very famous recreational activity to do when on holidays. It used to be a simple act of going from one point of a high snow covered slope down to the end with a snowboard on. It developed by being inspired by skateboarding where you move the snowboard with different tricks and freestyles that makes it more interesting. It is an extreme sport depending on how high the slopes the snowboarder prefers to go on. It is practiced in Winter Olympics since 1998.

Surfing, it’s all about the waves in this sport. All you need is a surfboard, wetsuit and the leash to keep your board near you at all times. The bigger the wave, the better the ride they said. Seriously though, no it’s not that simple. There is actually physics and math if am not mistaken used to keep that board on the wave that easily. Jokes aside, surfing is a really extreme sport which one has to learn very well to master it. During summer though surfing is a very popular recreational activity since it involves staying on the beach all day.

There are so many extreme sports that you just wouldn’t dream thinking of that are very doable. And since many of these sports are practiced as recreational activities, they still help with physical exercises to those who still want to have that excitement and danger when doing an activity.  Make sure to try some of these activities when your next vacation comes, you don’t know you may actually like it.
